The long and short of it: April 2023 to April 2024

The past year has been a rollercoaster of emotional, financial, and physical tolls on my body and mind. I largely feel that not many people, not even people that I hold as dear in my mind and heart believe in me as a jeweler, artisan, business person, etc. Well, honestly, there’s little else in this world that I enjoy doing enough, and that is reasonably socially acceptable, (we can’t all be vagabonds, can we?) that would drag me away from making small decorative objects with my hands and tools, for very long. No matter what whispers, naysaying people might make either out loud or in their heads, I know that this is the place and moment I am meant to be, without a doubt.

I took a sojourn into the land of technological understandings, with a web development course in 2023. It was paid for mostly by the State of Idaho, and I was curious. Could I get into another field? Could I improve my life with a ridiculously high paying, work-from-home job? I did fine. Great even, perhaps? But I cried almost every day from the unknowing of it all, and my body ached to be bent over my bench with a light shining onto my work in front of me, instead of glowing in my face. I learned a lot about my computer that I didn’t know…revisited the long forgotten command line interface, which brought back awful memories from junior high…and learned html and CSS tricks that will absolutely stay with me and inform my online presence forever. But the places I ran from, and into the art room flooded back to me in so many ways. When I called to tell my mother that I was taking the course, she said to me “You didn’t know how many days were in a year when I dropped you off at college.” That was all she said about it, she didn’t elaborate…but what she meant was abundantly clear. She didn’t see how I could be intelligent enough to even consider web development. That’s how she’s always regarded me, and perhaps it has become a self fulfilling prophecy. Web development is one of the biggest fields where imposter syndrome reigns as a deterrent to progress. You’re constantly learning, relearning, erasing what you thought you knew, and looking up new, updated answers to the same old questions. Its a field that is constantly changing and evolving, and yet, you can get away with using deprecated systems for quite a while until things start to fail. That’s a bit much for me. It was overwhelming, all encompassing of my time, and very depressing for me. I watched the sun rise and fall some days, barely getting up from the computer. Its no way to live. I thought maybe it would get better, the more I learned, but the nature of it is, you can never learn it all…and that is deeply disturbing to me. So that’s that. Perhaps I will revisit someday, but this 42 year old brain had quite enough of it for now…

I’m enjoying being back at my bench, making pretty things to sell at markets. And I’ve worked very hard to get my website set up with a new SHOP, where everything that I have available will be listed for online sales. The hosting is through Go Imagine, a company that donates all of its profits (not my profits, but the money they make from my sales fees, and monthly hosting fees) to children’s charities. They are also fully committed to helping handmade goods makers thrive, and have strict policies about what they allow on their site. Fingers crossed that they manage to keep that mission strong. Its a great company and I’m happy to be working with them.

Stay tuned in the coming days for Market announcements and events calendar for this upcoming season. And I’m thinking about doing a giveaway soon…its been a long time and my IG following could use a boost.

One last thing, sadly, our beloved American Staffordshire Terrier, Rocco, passed away on April 13th. He was a beautiful, sweet boy and I miss him with all my heart.

Boise, ID!

9/15/2023

My family and I have moved to Boise Idaho! Apologies for the long overdue update, here. It has taken me some time to settle in and find any sort of normalcy in my routine. I am still not back to my bench, but have taken a sharp detour to study Front End Web Development; HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It’s been very challenging for me, but also very fun and I am looking forward to making lots of changes and improvements in my web presence….and maybe I will even find a job in this field, with any luck. I fully intend to keep making, eventually, and I have many pieces that I have been slowly designing with lots of intention (which is different than how I typically work, building directly from my materials at hand). Stay tuned!

As always, if you need anything with jewelry that you’ve bought from me, or custom work and repairs, feel free to reach out to me through email, instagram or facebook!

In the meantime, here’s some pieces from prior years:

Spring! 2023🌼

Listed below are some of the committed places my work and I will be available for spring and early summer 2023.

I’m so excited to get rolling with this year. Lots of plans and ideas in the works…

I hope to see some friendly faces at all these fairs and festivals.

Not listed here are First Fridays at Hubmrkt in King William, and Second Saturdays at Soflo Market at Laredo/Cevallos. When those Markets start again, I will be at them, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Perpetual August…

Texas is hot. But we keep going. Bending, not breaking… and staying hydrated!

I will be setting up at First Friday around the corner of St. Mary’s and King William, known as the St. Mary’s Strip. There’s fresh cold beer at the Station Taproom, and they also will nuke you a $3. pizza slice. Or, there’s also a taco truck! Maverick is across the street if you’re into more sophisticated fare. This location is in walking distance of all the First Friday locations, and if you find residential parking in King William, its a great spot to start and end you’re evening.

On Saturday August 6th, I’ll be at Cool Crest Miniature Golf’s Good and Plant Market located at 1402 Fredericksburg Road.

Hope to see you there!

Jennifer

Still working…

Just a few images from my recent bench workings. I’m always exploring, looking for new little mistakes to celebrate…

I will be doing the Pearl Brewery’s Night Art Markets this summer, every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. The first one will be tomorrow, Wednesday May 4th from 5-9 pm. Its always a nice evening there, with a veritable dog parade, great snacks and drinks to be had, and excellent music.

Season of change

Hello!

Happy November 🙂

My Family and I are re-settling into business-as-usual after a very scary three months of total unemployment.  Phew!

That was rough, but we made it.  My Partner, Husband, Co-conspirator, and all around good guy, Gus, took a new job with an Engineering firm contracted with the Air-force.  Its all a bit hush-hush, as far as I know, but he seems to like it!  So, fingers crossed that it all goes smoothly.

My work is completely contingent on the schedule of our 20 month old daughter (and if you know anything about 20 month old people, you know that everything else takes a back seat!).  But, I manage to work on things a bit at a time while she sleeps and plays.  (and I usually manage to get things done when I say I can!)

I’ve set up a new shop with my supplier.  Here’s how it works: you can go to this site, choose your own parts for a ring, or a necklace or earrings (or whatever!), and send me an inquiry for completion of the piece or pieces.  This is a great way for you to have some input on design and takes a lot of the back and forth communication out of the equation, because you get to see and choose from everything I have access to as far as traditional jewelry work.  Of course, I still would be happy to make my own, wabi-sabi hammered, or otherwise custom work for you, but if you have a preference for a more traditional jewelry store look, I can do that too.

I’ve been thinking about what to write in this blog, and I would love some input from you!  If you have a moment, let me know by doing this little poll!  I’d so appreciate your thoughts!

As always, We’ll be setting up for First Friday at Hubmrkt in San Antonio from 5-11.  I would love to see you there!

Upside-Down, Rightside-Up

It has been many (many!) days since I last wrote here, or even stopped in to look around…honestly I thought this page self destructed from lack of payment for a fancy domain name…and yet, here we are, nothing lost!  Yay!

A baby has made her way into our lives, and all my little metal baby projects have shuffled a bit to the back for the time being… but I still see them from the corner of my eye.  I’m enjoying, reveling in all of this change and new experience.  And I am so grateful to my husband and partner, Gus, for supporting us through such a tender and important time in our lives.  I don’t know if I ever would have ever had a child if it wasn’t just like this.

We still make a point to get out to First Friday every month.  We’ve been incredibly lucky that our former neighbors from when we first moved to Texas have started a sweet little business called HUBMrkt in King William.  The proprietor team, Marty and Alicia, are so gracious and have offered us a semi-permanent vending spot for the rest of 2019, every First Friday.  So that’s where we’ll be, every month, please come see us! (except October, as we’ll be in Bayfield Wisconsin for the Apple Festival)

Gus sitting, tending the jewel-wares 🙂

Throughout this year my focus is going to be a slow evolution of what I’m making, how I’m displaying it, and keeping up the business end of everything(–the things I hate the most, like taxes, and permits and all that bureaucratic drivel.)

So, lately, I have been making very standard, simple work; things that will sell for $10-$30 as impulse buys to a young, fun loving crowd, such as these twisted copper rings. Also, the hairpins that I make, seem to go over really well with the crowd here, consisting of both military women (who need a simple, non-flashy accessory to wear in uniform) and a fair amount of crunchy moms with wild long hair.

I want to make more idea based, crazy work!  The method of make first, place it later is daunting.  Committing time money and energy to a trajectory that is so unsure is not a risk that I can afford right now…but I need to branch out.  The name of my business– Jennifer Hermann with “Handmade” tacked on the end is entirely intentional…I did not put “jeweler”  or “jewelry designer” on the end of that because I am mortified at the thought of pigeon-holing my self to the constraints of the tiny scale.  So, these things are swirling… and I’m looking for avenues… I love working large while striving for equal attention to tedious detail, as in small work.  Part of me wants to go that direction again…but I need to find purpose in it.
